Great Smoky Wildland Fire Module is planning to burn 155 acres adjacent to Cataloochee Valley on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. tomorrow (5/1/13) weather permitting. The first entry burn is unique in that the manner of ignition is to mimic a lightning strike on a ridge and let it back down the slopes on its own. Elk forage and habitat will be improved by the burn as they were reintroduced to the valley near the burn unit in 2001.
Great Smoky WFM helped reintroduce fire to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Yesterday the Wildland Fire Module based out of Great Smoky Mountains National Park helped burn the Mahogany Rock unit. It was the first prescribed fire in over 30 years on the Parkway.! Great first entry burn conditions helped achieve objectives and hopefully will be the start of an active burn program for BLRI.
