Great Smoky Wildland Fire Module is planning to burn 155 acres adjacent to Cataloochee Valley on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. tomorrow (5/1/13) weather permitting. The first entry burn is unique in that the manner of ignition is to mimic a lightning strike on a ridge and let it back down the slopes on its own. Elk forage and habitat will be improved by the burn as they were reintroduced to the valley near the burn unit in 2001.

Cataloochee burn was a big success. Day one including firing the main ridge and the northern boundary. Fire backed all night with no smoke issues at any time during the burn. Day two including grabbing the backing fires midslope and easing it on down a few spur ridges where fuels were conducive. An historic cemetary was carefully burned around that had massive fuel accumulations around it due to years of maintenance clearing the gravesite area and piling it on the edges. The burn received precipitation beginning the third day an currently there are no visible smokes.
